The
Bible: A Christian
Scientist's
Constant Companion
No body of
Christians believe more
sincerely in the Scriptures
than do Christian Scientists.
The Bible is their constant
companion, and it is not true
that they reject a part of
it. The Atlantic
Monthly, April 1904
Christian
Science makes Bible students. The
spiritual insight it gives
awakens a new impetus to study
the Bible, answering the question
How does one awaken an
interest in the study of the
Scriptures? People who have
never before read the Bible enjoy
reading it after gaining some
understanding of Christian
Science. The Bible is a daily
companion to Scientists and in
Christian Science church services
one half of the Lesson-Sermon
consists of selections from the
Scriptures. Christian Science not
only teaches that the Scriptural
truths are beautiful, but also
(and more importantly) practical
in healing the sick as well as
reforming the sinner.
In a
lecture delivered at Cornell
University, in March 1901, Carol
Norton, C.S.D., said the
following of Christian Science
and the Bible: The history
of the Bible is the history of
the sacred literature of the
Hebrews and of their direct
successors, the early Christians.
The Truth resident in the Old
Testament attests its divine
source. The greater or more
clearly expressed truths manifest
in the New Testament prove its
spiritual origin. In direct
harmony with and in fulfilment of
both the Old and New Testament
are the teachings of the
Christian Science
textbook.
